All of the children are valued in the An Hoa Social Caring Center community. As local families have visited the Center over the past two years, they have observed the resilience, creativity and beauty in the children with special needs. Here are a few of their stories (printed with permission by the Center and the children's families):

Nhi is a 12-year old girl with moderate mental retardation. Like the rest of the children, her parents are living in extreme poverty. When Nhi began at the An Hoá Center in the spring of 2008, she needed assistance to feed herself and use the bathroom. The teachers spent much of the time repeating directions to her and coaching her in all interactions. Now, Nhi has improved speech and can take care of her own basic needs. The teachers state that Nhi is a determined child who enjoys coming to the Center each day.
